Matthew May

Matthew May serves as a postdoctoral associate with the Idaho Policy Institute and holds a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from Boise State University. Part of that program’s inaugural cohort, Matthew is the first individual to earn this degree at Boise State. Matthew also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science (summa cum laude) and a Master of Public Administration, both from Boise State University. Matthew is from Eagle, Idaho and has long been interested in elections, electoral policy, and the legislative process. His dissertation research focused on the implications of Idaho changing from an open primary system to a closed primary system and how exposing the partisan preferences of the professional bureaucracy affected their relationship with public policymakers. During his graduate studies, Matthew frequently served as a research assistant to faculty members, assisting in research on a variety of topics including network management, workplace aggression, public policy surveys, participatory budgeting, municipal rainy-day funds, county-level strategic planning, legislative turnover, and electoral policy. He also interned with both the Idaho Senate and the Idaho Lieutenant Governor’s Office, providing policy research to elected officials. Matthew co-authored a chapter in Reapportionment and Redistricting in the West with Dr. Gary F. Moncrief, comparing the redistricting processes in ten western states. He has also served as Journal Manager for The Social Science Journal. In his spare time, Matthew is an avid reader, enjoys writing, photography, and baseball.
